Bentonite is an off-white montmorillonite clay formed from altered volcanic ash. It has a sheet-silicate structure and is especially notable for the way in which it absorbs and loses water and for its base-exchange properties. Sodic bentonite can absorb up to 10 times its own weight in water and can swell to 18 times its dry volume.

Bentonite is the commercial name of a whole range of natural clays with a high water absorption capacity causing it to expand and swell. Bentonite predominantly consists of montmorillonite: a clay mineral belonging to a class of phyllosilicates called smectites.
